ZteaM Cycling San Diego

Welcome to the San Diego chapter of ZteaM cycling. My name is Scott Gilbert and I serve as the San Diego Chapter Leader. I myself have been a cyclist for over 20 years and like most of our members, I embrace the sport of cycling with great enthusiasm not only for the fitness but also for it's social and community aspects.

Our current goals are to provide an inclusive club that strives to meet the interest of any and all. Some of our members have had great success in their pursuit of racing, others simply enjoy a regular weekend ride.

In the meantime, please contact me via email about getting together for a ride or join us on one of our weekly rides.

Weekly Ride Schedule:

The Sunday ride will be determined 1 week or more ahead of time dependent upon the wishes of the club members. By default, unless otherwise indicated the McDonalds Ride is the defacto club ride. An email will be sent out to members to notify you of which ride we will be doing as a club ride. If you have any ride suggestions email them to me.

The McDonalds ride:

This fast paced ride was started many years ago by the Cyclo-Vets and continues every Sunday. Cyclists gather at the parking lot by the McDonalds on Telegraph Canyon Road just east of the 805 freeway. There is a core group of about 30-40 regulars but new riders are welcome. The rollout begins at 8:30 and is slow paced until reaching Hunte Parkway. Once it passes Hunte Parkway the pace quickens and starts to string out into a single file pace line as it skirts the edge of Otay Lake. The pace stays high 25 mph avg until just before Hwy 94 where there is a ‘finish line’ at the stop sign just before the junction. Usually a small group of climbers will continue over to Honey Springs Road and go about halfway up but the main group turns around and heads backs at an easy pace for a few minutes allowing everyone to regroup before someone takes a flyer and then the chase is on by the group all the way back to the McDonalds.

If you are looking to improve your pack riding skills and increase your overall speed this is a good ride for you.

The Donut Ride:

The Saturday morning Donut Ride has been going on for decades. The ride officially starts on Coronado at Pats' house with a casual paced warm up down the Strand bike path until reaching 7th St. Re-groups at the corner of 7th and Palm by the donut shop. It usually starts at 7:30 from here once it looks like no one else is coming. One group rides up the bike path and the faster group rides the shoulder of the Strand Hwy. The pace usually picks up quickly and stays high after that. Various attacks get reeled in and sometimes stay away. The finish is the white line just after the speed bump across from the plantation style house. Ride a couple blocks to Pat's house afterwards for donuts!

If you are looking for about 20 minutes of high intensity work you can get it here.

Additional rides you may enjoy

The Laguna Triangle:

The classic Laguna Triangle. Start in Pine Valley at the grocery store parking lot and head southeast out of town to Sunrise Hwy up a steep but short 'warm up' climb. Turn left onto Sunrise Hwy and start the 10 mile 5%+ grade. Enjoy the long downhill with just a couple short hills to break it up to Hwy 79 at Cuyamaca Lake. Turn left on 79 and continue past Cuyamaca Lake up a short climb with a great downhill until Old Hwy 80 and turn left. Climb the short hill to Guatay then it's a fast downhill and flat ride back to the start. There are stores at the top of Laguna and at the lake to refuel if needed. Hot in the summer and low traffic on weekdays and early on weekends. 45 miles and 3000 feet of climbing, most of which is on the first climb.

If you are looking to improve your climbing then this is for you. If you are an inexperienced climber this is a good route to try. Advice/tips will be given if asked during the climb to help you improve your climbing skills. Bring money and food and two bottles. This ride lasts 2-3 hours.

Kitchen Creek and the Laguna Triangle (2 laps), Everest Challenge training ride:

This ride is designed to help you train for the grueling Everest Challenge in September

Start at the grocery store in Pine Valley (Laguna Triangle start) and head out to Sunrise Hwy but turn right instead of left and crossover I-8 to Old Hwy 80 and continue East/South a few miles until Kitchen Creek Road. Head left onto Kitchen Creek and up the hill! Turn right onto Sunrise Hwy and continue up Mount Laguna stopping at the store to replenish water/food. Continue on with the Laguna Triangle loop. Do a second lap to get 112 miles and 7000+ ft of elevation gain. You can do one lap for 55 miles and half the elevation or if you need to bail just head down Sunrise Hwy for a freewheeling 35+ mph coast back to your car.

This is a difficult ride which makes it excellent for training.
